15 Tips To Take Care Of Your Eyes

Eyes are the windows to the soul. It may be a cliche phrase, but it works perfectly here. We spend hours and hours every day in front of a computer, our phones, or the TV. In the end, the eyes are often neglected and often denied the care they so intensively need. They are the most valuable and the most sensitive organs we have. They should not be taken for granted.

Here are 15 Tips To Take Care Of Your Eyes

1. Wash Your Hands

Yes, as absurd as this advice is, hand sanitation is necessary to prevent diseases and keep your eyes healthy. Think about all the surfaces your hands brush against before you reach up to scratch your eyes. The transfer of bacteria is just as harmful to your vision as it is to your immune system.

2. Eat Tons Of Green Leafy Veggies

Since childhood, everyone has heard of this; green leafy vegetables should always be included in one’s diet. And yes, those dietary charts were right. Green leafy vegetables like spinach, lettuce, and broccoli offer a great source of iron. Along with these, make sure you consume lots of non-meat proteins such as eggs, beans, and nuts.

3. When Outside, Wear Sunglasses

The sun can do irreversible damage to your eyes. It is recommended to stay in the shade, but we all know that is not possible at all times; hence the best solution is to wear sunglasses. Invest in a pair of good-quality sunglasses that offer the utmost protection for your peepers.

4. Reduce Eye Strain

If you spend 10 hours a day working on your laptop, reducing strain is the best way to keep your vision protected. This can be done by taking care of simple things, like wearing protective glasses, turning on a blue light filter, and sitting at a reasonable distance from the screen.

5. Take a Break From Electronics

This goes without saying. Now that entertainment, work, and education are available on our phones and laptops, your eyes need a break now and then. So shut down your laptop, switch off your phone, and close your eyes for some time before continuing with reading this article.

6. Get Regular Eye Checkups

Everyone gets regular health checkups to ensure that their body is healthy and free of diseases and infection. Just like that, your eyes need to be checked out by a professional every once in a while. The obvious symptoms are easy to catch, like redness and itchiness can be easily detected. But some symptoms may not be visible and need medical assistance.

7. Take Some Time To Pamper Them

Do you go for spa treatments and mani-pedis now and then to stay and feel youthful? Then why not treat your eyes the same way? They deserve a pampering session too. Something as simple as placing cucumber slices on your eyelids can do wonders by relaxing the muscles and relieving stress.

8. Reduce Alcohol Consumption and Smoking

We are all well aware of the effects that smoking and drinking have on our lungs and liver, but have you ever wondered what it does to your eyes? Excessive smoking and alcohol consumption can weaken your vision over time. So drink responsibly and stop yourself when reaching for another cigarette.

9. Eye Exercises

Just like the rest of your body, your eyes need exercise. They are muscles too, and they require movement to relieve stress, strengthen weak muscles, and stimulate blood circulation, all of which are crucial for good vision.

10. Never Sleep With Makeup On

Understandably, you don’t have the energy to carry out your skin care regimen after a long day. But the least you can do to take care of your eyes is keep the makeup off of them and let the skin around them breathe. Not following this through will result in makeup residue drying out your eyes and causing redness and irritation.

11. Refrain From Sharing Makeup

Bacteria can be transferred easily when you share your makeup brushes or palettes with other users. This is the fastest way to damage your eyes and contract diseases and infections.

12. Care For Contact Lenses

Contact lenses stay in direct contact with the eyes. Hence they need to be looked after just as much as your eyes. If you wear contact lenses for most of the day, you must remove them by the end of the day and keep them clean and free of any contamination.

13. Keep Track Of Family History

Sometimes eating leafy greens and doing eye exercises seem pointless when your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents had weak eyesight. Family history is significant, but it should not be the reason for quitting on your health. It should be the motivator for better eye care. Make sure your optician and healthcare providers are informed of your family eye history for better care of your eyes.

14. Keep Your Health Conditions In Check

We know what you are thinking. We may sound like a broken record telling you to take care of your eyes to keep your eyes healthy. But no, that’s not it. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, such as high cholesterol, blood pressure, or diabetes, they can affect your eyesight without any direct physical damage to your eyes. Hence it is crucial to keep your physical health in check to keep your eyes in peak condition.

15. Look Out For Damage Symptoms

Your body knows when something is wrong, and symptoms are the body’s way of yelling for help. So what are the symptoms of potential or ongoing eye damage? These include irritation, redness, blindspots, and any changes or irregularities in specs or contact lenses for those who wear them.

If eyes are the windows to the soul, then it is your responsibility to keep these windows clean and free of damage. Just like the rest of the body, the eyes too deserve to be looked after (pun not intended). Use these steps and reward them for all the work they do.
