Around 3000 years ago in ancient Egypt, the practice of sugar confectionery was started. There was no sugar and the use of honey was extensive. This honey, was mixed with many herbs, spices, nuts and fruits to bring the desired flavor.

It was the Persians, in the Middle Ages who started the sugarcane cultivation. This led to the development of mass refining methods and as a result sugar based candy came to life. However, the quantity of sugar available in the European markets was fairly less and hence it was sold mainly at pharmacies or apothecaries.

A candy revolution was brought about by the Venetians. They began the import of sugar in 14th century Arabia. It was here in the 16th century, that sugar was molded into beautiful and attractive candy. Later on, in the 18th century, mass production of candy was started with the use of machines.
